Lining and replacement, side by side

Lining is real technology, and on the right pipe it's the best call on the truck. On channeled cast iron, it's a clean video over a problem that's still down there. The rest of this post is about telling those two pipes apart before anyone sells you a method.

One thing to settle first, because two very different jobs get called “trenchless.” This post is about cast iron drain lines under and inside the house — the ones channeling out under your slab. Why a liner needs a pipe to hold onto

Here's how cured-in-place pipe is built, because the method is the whole answer. A felt or fiberglass sleeve is soaked with a two-part epoxy resin, then turned inside-out or pulled into the old pipe. A bladder inflates and presses the wet resin against the walls, and heat, steam, or UV light cures it into a hard, jointless shell — a pipe inside your pipe.

The catch is baked into the definition. The national standard for cured-in-place pipe (ASTM F1216) describes the finished liner as a pipe “formed within an existing pipe” that “takes the shape of and fits tightly to the existing pipe.” A liner is a casting. It reproduces whatever it's poured against. Epoxy is strong; it is not a personality. It does not decide to sit up straight inside a pipe that's lying down.

That same standard is blunt about what governs whether a liner will even work: the design thickness of a cured-in-place pipe is “largely a function of the condition of the existing pipe.” Read that again — the old pipe is an engineering input, not a passive tube you slide a sleeve through. The engineers who write the manuals treat host-pipe condition as step one. Iowa's public design manual, which pulls its equations straight from ASTM F1216, says the first step in designing a lining project “is identifying the condition of the existing pipe.” Before anyone talks price, someone should be reading your pipe on a camera.

The dividing line The standard sorts old pipe into two classes, and the line between them is exactly the line between lining and replacing.

A partially deteriorated pipe still “can support the soil and surcharge loads,” still has good soil beside it, and may have “longitudinal cracks and up to 10.0% distortion of the diameter.” That's a pipe with a real problem — cracks, weeping joints, root intrusion — that is still fundamentally round and still doing its structural job. That is lining's lane, and lining does it beautifully.

A fully deteriorated pipe is the other thing entirely. The standard's own words: sections “are missing,” the pipe “has lost its original shape,” or it “has corroded due to the effects of the fluid.” That is the clinical description of channeled cast iron — the bottom acid-etched away until wastewater runs over bare dirt. For a pipe in that class, lining isn't a coat of paint over a crack — the liner has to be engineered to “carry all of the hydraulic, soil, and live loads by itself, as if the host pipe were not present.” A structurally dead pipe under a slab isn't the host you build that against. It's the thing you take out.

Then there's grade, which lining physically cannot touch. Plumbing code requires horizontal drain piping to run “in uniform alignment at uniform slopes” — a minimum of a quarter inch of fall per foot on lines 2½ inches and smaller, or an eighth of an inch per foot on the 3- and 4-inch drains you’ll find in most houses. A liner copies the pipe it's inside, so if that pipe sags into a belly, the cured liner sags with it. You end up with a smooth, sealed, expensive low spot that catches solids exactly like the belly did. The only way to give a drain correct fall is to re-lay it to grade, and you can only re-lay a pipe you've dug up. Code even makes that inspection mandatory in the case it governs: when a whole drainage system is replaced and an old under-slab drain is kept to serve it, that drain “shall be internally examined to verify that the piping is sloping in the correct direction, is not broken, is not obstructed.” Camera-first isn't a courtesy on our trucks. It's plain diligence — and where code covers a reused drain like that, it's a flat requirement.

The tactic to watch for

The pitch to watch for: a liner sold on a pipe that can't hold one

Lining is the most upsold trenchless method there is, because from a sales seat it's close to free money — no jackhammer, no shoring, no concrete to pour back, two people and an afternoon. That incentive is exactly why the pitch shows up on pipes that don't qualify.

The play runs like this. A crew scopes an under-slab drain that's channeled or bellied — a pipe that genuinely needs to come out. Instead of quoting the dig, the salesman sells a “no-dig” epoxy liner as space-age technology, around $20,000. They blast the line to shove the standing water out of the way for a few minutes, invert the resin through the dead pipe, cure it, and hand over a clean white video. It looks solved. Within about a year the sag fills back in with waste and paper, and the line stops. When the homeowner calls back, the warranty turns out to exclude “existing slope defects” and “ground shifting” — the exact defect the liner was poured over. Now the pipe has to be dug and replaced anyway, another $15,000 on top. They paid for the liner and the dig they were promised they'd avoid.

Where the iron is channeled, we say so and quote the replacement, because a liner there is a bet we already know loses. So which one is better?

There is no universal winner, and any answer given before a camera goes in the pipe is a guess. Lining is better when your cast iron is cracked or leaking at joints but still round and still holding slope — you keep the floor intact and skip the demolition, and that's a genuine win. Replacement is better — and honestly the only real option — when the bottom is channeled out, a section is missing, or the run has a belly, because those are the two things lining can't fix: a missing structure and a bad grade.
