Rolling a stocked commercial van and a licensed technician to your address costs a company somewhere between $150 and $200 before anyone touches a wrench. So when a heavily marketed outfit advertises a $29 dispatch fee — or a "free" one — that visit is designed to lose money at your curb and make it back in your garage.

Here's the standard sequence. The tech reads the data plate before he touches the valve, because the script keys off age, not failure: past six years old, the unit gets "condemned." Then the disassembly starts — burner assembly out, gas line disconnected, T&P valve unscrewed, parts fanned across the floor. Then the line: "I can't put this back together. Liability." You're now standing in a cold garage next to a dismantled appliance, you've already paid to get him there, and the only working plan in the room is the quote on his iPad. He had the loan application open before he found your shutoff valve.

None of that is diagnosis. A water heater diagnosis takes a pressure gauge, a multimeter, and a technician who gets paid the same whether you buy or not. Nothing has to come apart for us to tell you what failed.

The quote lands, and it's enormous. Before you can flinch, the iPad rotates toward you: "Don't worry about the total — with financing it's a small monthly payment, and there's no interest for 12 months. Want me to get you approved right now?"

Read this part slowly, because it's the sharpest hook in the pitch. Most same-as-cash plumbing financing is deferred-interest lending, which is a different machine than zero-interest lending. The interest doesn't stop existing during the promotional window — it accrues silently from day one, at a default rate that runs up to 26.99%. Pay the balance in full by the deadline and the accrued pile is erased. Miss the deadline by a single day, or come up short by any amount, and the entire backdated charge lands at once — calculated on the original full balance, not on whatever you still owe.

Two more gears in the machine worth seeing. First, the plumbing company isn't your lender: a third-party fintech pays them the full invoice within days, so the shop has its money and no stake in how the next 60 to 72 months of payments treat you. Second, the monthly-payment framing is the point — a number that sounds like a phone bill keeps your eyes off the five-figure total you're signing for while standing next to your own disassembled water heater. That's not financing. That's a trap with a brochure.

Tank breached = dead. Galvanic corrosion — the slow reaction between Oklahoma's mineral-heavy water and the steel shell — eventually eats through the glass lining. Once the tank itself weeps, no patch or sealant brings it back, and the cold supply keeps feeding the breach until someone shuts it off. The typical window is 8 to 15 years, faster when the anode rod was never changed.

Component failed = repair. The T&P relief valve, heating elements, thermostats, thermocouple, gas control valve, boiler drain, dip tube, anode rod, supply connections — every one is a stocked, replaceable part bolted or threaded onto a healthy tank.

The money gap between those two sentences is not small. A T&P valve is an inexpensive brass part. That gap is why the condemn-and-replace script exists, and it's why our technicians aren't paid commission: the tech who swaps your thermocouple takes home the same pay as the tech who installs a new unit. If a quote claims "the city requires $2,000 in mandatory code upgrades," ask to see the line item. Every year: lift the T&P valve's test lever and confirm it snaps back and reseals, then flush a few gallons off the tank bottom. Oklahoma water carries enough mineral to bake a sediment crust onto the burner plate in a couple of seasons — that's the rumbling you hear.

Years 3–5: check the expansion tank's air pre-charge against your home's static water pressure. A tire gauge on the Schrader valve answers that in thirty seconds.

Years 5–7: pull and inspect the anode rod — the sacrificial rod that corrodes on purpose so the tank doesn't. Hard water eats anodes faster than the owner's manual assumes, and a depleted rod means the water has started on the steel.

Years 8–15: the corrosion window. Watch for rust-tinted hot water and weeping at the tank seams. A dry tank in year twelve owes nobody a replacement — but this is the stretch to plan a swap in daylight, instead of signing a loan at midnight in a wet garage.
