Three Repairs Into the Same Pipe, and Nobody Is Saving Money

If your line has failed exactly once, stop reading and go to our water line repair page — a spot repair is probably the right call, and it's the one we'll make. This page is for people staring at a second or third dig.

A buried line doesn't fail in three places by coincidence. Polybutylene — the gray or blue plastic pipe run all over the metro into the mid-90s — dries out and busts, and when one section goes, every section is the same age and the same chemistry. Old galvanized steel doesn't burst so much as strangle, scaling shut until a 1-inch line is pushing water through an opening closer to an eighth of an inch. Neither one improves with another patch.

The patch math is ugly, too. Every spot repair buys the same fixed work — locate, excavate, repair, backfill, restore — even when the fix itself takes twenty minutes. Pay for that trench three times and you've spent most of a new line in dig labor. You still own the same dying pipe.

The Subcontractor Markup, and the Trench Nobody Shores

The first is the dig. Plenty of plumbing shops don't own excavation equipment, so the trench goes to a subcontractor: the sub bills the plumber, the plumber adds margin, and you pay both. Two companies profit from one hole in your yard. Our excavation crew is our own — saw-cutting, digging, and concrete pour-back included — so the trench, the pipe, and the patch land on one invoice.

The second corner matters more. OSHA 29 CFR 1926.652 requires a protective system in any trench five feet or deeper: shoring, a trench shield, or walls sloped back. Central Oklahoma's heavy red clay rates Type C — the least stable soil class OSHA hands out — which means walls cut back a foot and a half for every foot of depth, about 34 degrees. Red clay has two settings, brick and soup, and one afternoon thunderstorm flips the switch. Shoring costs money to rent, so some crews skip it and stand a worker in an unprotected clay hole. Two questions expose all of it: who runs the excavator, and what goes in the trench past five feet? Ask us. We like those questions.

How a Reroute Actually Goes, Meter to House

A reroute stops fighting the old pipe's path and picks the one you'd choose today: the failed line retires in place, and a new one runs meter-to-house through clean ground.

Locates before buckets. Okie811 marks gas, electric, and communications before any digging starts. Every job, every time.

Route planning. The shortest path that dodges the driveway, the mature tree roots, and whatever got built over the old trench in the last forty years.

The trench. Cut below frost depth, where a February hard freeze can't reach, and sloped or shielded to the OSHA standard when it runs deep.

The pipe. One continuous run, typically 3/4-inch or 1-inch. For most reroutes we like PEX-B carrying the 5306 designation — the leading 5 is the top chlorine-resistance class, and city water carries chlorine every day. Flexibility matters as much: one continuous run, zero couplings buried in the yard. A buried fitting is a leak with a scheduled appointment.

The connections. A clean tie-in at the meter and a full-port brass quarter-turn shutoff where the line enters the house — not a builder-grade gate valve that seizes when you finally need it. If static pressure runs high, a pressure-reducing valve like the Watts LF25AUB-Z3 goes in just downstream of the meter, before any branch.

Test, then dirt. The new line holds pressure before the trench closes. The old line is disconnected at both ends, capped, and left dead in the ground.

Could we replace the old line in its own trench instead? Sometimes we do — when the original path is short, shallow, and clear. But digging the old route means digging through everything built on top of it since: the driveway, the retaining wall, the root ball of a twenty-year-old maple. A reroute treats those as things to go around instead of bills to pay.

  • Polybutylene (gray or blue plastic): borrowed time. It dries out and busts. Replace on your schedule, before it picks its own.
  • Galvanized steel: watch pressure, not just the bill. Scale closes the bore for years before the first leak — fading flow at the hose bib is the warning.
  • The repair count: one failure is a repair. A second failure on the same line is chronic. A third is a trench subscription.
  • The monthly meter habit: everything off, then watch the low-flow indicator for a full minute. If it moves, water is leaving somewhere. Free leak detection you already own.

What does it mean to reroute a water main?

The failed line between the meter and the house is retired in place, and a brand-new line runs along a different path. A spot repair fixes one point; a reroute replaces the pipe entirely. It's the right call when the material is at end of life, or when the old path runs under things nobody wants to excavate — driveways, slabs, mature trees.

I've already had this line patched twice. Is a third repair worth it?

Usually not, and a repair-first shop doesn't say that lightly. Two failures on one buried line mean the material is failing as a system, and every dig re-buys the same locate-excavate-backfill labor just to reach the pipe. One exception: if both failures were at fittings rather than in the pipe body, the line may have life left. We'll tell you which case you've got before anyone digs.

Do you leave the old water line in the ground after a reroute?

Yes. It's disconnected at both ends, capped, and depressurized — with no water in it, it can't leak or hurt anything. It just sits there, a souvenir for whoever digs in that yard in eighty years. Pulling it out would double the excavation for zero mechanical benefit, which is the kind of billable theater we don't do.

What pipe do you use for the new line from the meter to the house?

For most residential reroutes, PEX-B rated 5306 — the 5 is the top chlorine-resistance class, which matters because city water is chlorinated. It lays in one continuous run with no buried couplings and shrugs off freeze stress better than rigid pipe. Where soil, code, or run length calls for something else, we'll say so and explain why.

Will a reroute tear up my whole yard?

No. A reroute is one narrow trench along the shortest clean path — not an excavation along every foot of the old line. Sod gets cut and set aside, spoil piles to one side, and backfill goes in compacted in lifts so the trench line doesn't sink into a moat next spring.

What happens if the new route has to cross my driveway or sidewalk?

First choice: it doesn't — that's what route planning is for. When a crossing can't be avoided, we saw-cut a clean section, trench through, and pour the patch back ourselves. Cutting, digging, and concrete are all our own crew — no second contractor to schedule, no markup riding on someone else's invoice.

How do you keep the new line from freezing in an Oklahoma winter?

Depth does most of the work: the line is buried below frost depth, where a hard freeze can't reach it. The weak point on any service line is the riser — where pipe leaves the ground and enters the house — so that's where insulation gets focused. Oklahoma cold snaps kill pipe at hose bibs and exposed risers long before they touch a properly buried line.

Is the city responsible for the water line on my side of the meter?

No. The utility's responsibility generally ends at the meter; everything from the meter coupling to your house — maintenance, repair, replacement — belongs to the homeowner.
