Storm Season Doesn't Send a Calendar Invite
Oklahoma didn't hand out many basements. The same red clay that shoves our sewer lines around made digging them expensive, so most of the metro sits on slab — which means if you have a basement, a storm shelter, or a below-grade bathroom, you own one of the few holes in the ground that rain can find.
And nobody tests a sump pump. We're not scolding you — nobody does. It ran when the house was inspected, and the pit has been invisible since. Then the first gully-washer of April rolls in, the pit fills, and you learn the float has been pinned against the basin wall since last summer.
What most people never get told: the motor is usually the last thing to die. The float switch and the check valve — the two cheapest parts in the system — quit first, and either one can take the whole setup out of service. That's good news. Most "dead" sump pumps we open in Edmond aren't dead at all.
The Waterproofing Pitch (and Why You Won't Hear It From Us)
There's a routine that happens to people with water below grade. The pump quits, you search for help, and the company that shows up doesn't open the pit — it opens a presentation. A moisture meter touches the wall, somebody frowns, and twenty minutes later you're looking at a financed proposal for a full perimeter drainage system, wall membranes, and a "sump package." The stuck float that started all of this never comes up.
Gage's rule, in his own words: "The biggest scams are full replacements for things that could be repaired easily." That applies to pumps the same way it applies to water heaters.
Our scope, stated plainly: we do pump work. Floats, check valves, weep holes, discharge lines, basins, sewage ejectors, battery backups, lift stations. If your gutters dump at the foundation, we'll point at them and say so — but we won't dress a pump repair up as a basement-remediation project. Real drainage work exists. It just shouldn't be the opening bid for a float that's hung up on its own cord.
What We Actually Do When We Open Your Pit
No presentation. We pull the lid and lift the pump.
The float gets swung through its full travel by hand — a tethered float needs room to swim, and a tight pit or a pump that's walked sideways will pin it. The switch gets tested with a multimeter, because a waterlogged float can look fine and never close the circuit. Then the check valve: when its flapper dies, everything the pump lifts falls straight back down, and the motor spends the night re-pumping the same 50 gallons. If the pump hums but moves nothing, we check for airlock — there should be a 3/16-inch weep hole drilled in the discharge between the pump and the check valve, and we find plenty that clogged or were never drilled.
Then the parts nobody looks at: the impeller, which silt and pit gravel love to jam; the 1-1/2-inch schedule 40 PVC discharge line, which by code can never be smaller than the pump's outlet; and where that line ends, because groundwater should daylight away from your foundation, not loop back toward it.
If the motor really is cooked, we'll say so — motors don't get resurrected. Then we'll tell you what we'd put in our own pit: a pump with a cast iron housing, sized to the actual lift, on its own circuit — not the lightest plastic unit on the shelf.
Battery Backups: Honest Math Before You Buy One
Your primary pump has one failure mode no plumber can repair: the storm that fills your pit is the same storm that drops your power line. A pump with no electricity is a paperweight with a float.
A battery backup is a second, smaller pump riding a deep-cycle battery. The honest part the boxes don't print large: it buys you hours, not days. Runtime depends on how often the pump cycles — a slow seep might let it idle through the night; a sideways Oklahoma thunderstorm refilling the pit every minute chews through the battery fast. The battery also ages out unused, so it needs a written install date and the same yearly test as the main pump.
Water-powered backups exist too — no battery to die, but they move less water and burn a lot of city water doing it.

A Liberty Pump That Kept Blowing Its Own Discharge Apart
Here's what diagnosis-first looks like on a real job. In July 2025 we worked a commercial lift station where the Liberty pump was building so much pressure it was blowing the discharge pipe apart every time it kicked on. The replacement-first answer is a new pump. Wrong — the pump was healthy. The discharge line was too small for the flow, choking the output and turning the pipe into the fuse. We upsized the discharge line and the "pump problem" was gone.

Your Pump's Maintenance Clock
- Every March, run the bucket test. Pour 5 gallons into the pit before storm season opens. The float should rise free, the pump should kick on, the water should leave, and nothing should slam or trickle back. Two minutes, zero tools.
- When short-cycling starts, the check valve is talking. A pump re-running every few minutes in dry weather is re-lifting the same water. Replace the valve before the motor pays for it.
- Date-stamp the backup battery. Paint-pen the install date on it. A deep-cycle battery retires quietly after a few years — it will not send notice.
- Clean the basin once a year. Silt and gravel migrate in, jam impellers, and wedge floats against the wall.
- Respect the motor's age. A pump that has cycled through a decade of Oklahoma springs has earned suspicion. Replace it on a calm Tuesday, on your schedule — not mid-storm, on the pump's.
FAQ
Why does my sump pump keep running when the pit is empty?
Either the float is stuck up or the switch has failed closed. Tethered floats hang on pit walls, power cords, and basins that have shifted; vertical floats jam with debris. If water is returning to the pit, a dead check valve is dropping everything the pump just lifted back down, so it "needs" to run again every few minutes. Both repairs are small next to the motor they protect.
Why is my sump pump running but no water is coming out?
Almost always an airlock or a backwards check valve. A 3/16-inch weep hole in the discharge between the pump and the check valve is supposed to bleed off trapped air; if it's clogged — or was never drilled — the impeller spins against an air bubble and moves nothing. A check valve set against its flow arrow does the same. The pump is usually fine, which is why we diagnose before we replace.
How long will a battery backup sump pump actually run in a storm?
Hours, not days — and how many depends on how often it has to cycle. A slow seep might let it idle most of the night; a pit refilling every minute drains it fast. A battery several years old also holds far less than its label claims, used or not. Give the backup the same yearly bucket test as the main pump.
Why does my sump pump make a loud bang when it shuts off?
That bang is the check valve slamming shut as the water column in the discharge reverses — water hammer. It isn't harmless: repeated hammering works every fitting loose over time. A spring-loaded "silent" check valve closes before the column can reverse. If the bang is new, the old valve is warning you it's on the way out.
What's the difference between a sump pump and a sewage ejector pump?
A sump pump moves groundwater out of a pit and away from your foundation. A sewage ejector lifts wastewater from below-grade fixtures — a basement bathroom, a laundry sink — into the sanitary line, from a sealed, vented basin, with a pump built to pass 2-inch solids. They are not interchangeable. We work on both, plus their bigger commercial cousin, the lift station.
How often should I test my sump pump?
Once a year minimum, right before Oklahoma's spring storm season — and after any long dry stretch, because seals dry out and floats stick when a pump sits idle. The test is a 5-gallon bucket of water and two minutes of watching: float rises free, pump kicks on, water leaves, nothing slams or trickles back. Fail any step and you've found the problem on a sunny day instead of during the warning siren.
Do I need a 1/3 HP or 1/2 HP sump pump?
It's about lift and inflow, not bragging rights. A 1/3 HP pump handles most residential pits with a modest vertical lift; a 1/2 HP earns its keep when the lift is tall, the discharge run is long, or the pit refills fast. Bigger is not automatically better — an oversized pump in a small basin short-cycles itself to an early death. We size to the hole, not to the shelf.
