Here's what catches people: a duplex station hides its own failures. The alarm float sits above the lag float — by the time the horn sounds, the station already asked both pumps for help and at least one didn't answer. A lead pump can die quietly while the lag pump covers every cycle for weeks. The building drains fine. Then the second pump quits on a Friday night, and the only warning you got was the one that came too late.

Here's why that pitch works: a fouled float and a seized pump produce the same symptom — a basin that won't drain — and they sit at opposite ends of the repair bill. The float switch is one of the cheapest components in the entire station. A pair of commercial submersible pumps is the most expensive thing in it. A tech who skips the diagnosis gets to sell you the second one every time.
Make any plumber show you the numbers before you sign anything: running amp draw on each pump against its nameplate rating, and an insulation test on the motor windings. A motor that pulls nameplate amps and tests clean isn't dead, no matter what the quote says. What We Actually Check, in Order
The diagnosis runs from cheap to expensive, because that's the order things actually fail.
Floats first. We cycle each one by hand — stop, lead, lag, alarm — and watch the panel respond. Tethered floats hang up on their own cords and on the grease cap that forms across the water line. A float that can't tip is a pump that never gets the signal.
Then the panel: contactors, the alternating relay, and the hour meters — the station's diary. One pump showing triple the hours of its twin means the alternator quit rotating duty, and one motor has been doing two motors' work.
Then the check valves. A worn flapper lets every gallon you just pumped fall back into the basin, so the pump chases its own discharge — that's where short cycling and burned contactors come from.
Then, and only then, the pumps. We pull them on their guide rails, clear the volute, check the impeller, and test amp draw and winding insulation. If a pump really is gone — water past the shaft seal into the motor housing, shorted windings, an impeller worn past spec — we say so, and we replace it with a solids-handling unit from Liberty Pumps or Zoeller, sized to your basin and the head your force main demands. Not whatever's on the truck.
The Lift Station Clock: Floats First, Then Check Valves, Then Pumps
- Floats foul early and often. Grease coats them, tether cords tangle them, debris pins them. The cheapest part in the basin is the most common reason a "dead" station died.
- Check valves wear next. A clacking or slamming valve is the warning; a leaking flapper means constant refilling and short cycling.
- Impellers collect whatever the building flushes. Wipes braid into rope and wrap the impeller, and amp draw creeps up before the pump stalls.
- Seals let go with age. Moisture working past the shaft seal into the motor housing kills windings slowly. An insulation test finds the trend before the breaker trips.
- The basin itself fills with grease and grit. A cap thick enough to hang up the floats speeds up every other failure on this list.

Why is my lift station alarm going off?
Water in the wet well rose past the alarm float — which only happens after the pumps that should have stopped it didn't. The usual suspects: a fouled or tangled float, a tripped breaker, a dead contactor, a failed pump, or storm inflow the station can't keep up with. The horn is the last float in the basin, not the first.
Why does my lift station pump run constantly without shutting off?
Usually one of three things. The stop float is hung up — grease or a wrapped tether is holding it on. Or the check valve is leaking, and every gallon pumped out falls back into the basin. Or the pump is air-locked and running without moving water. Submersible motors are cooled by the liquid around them — a pump that never rests is headed for its second failure.
Why is my lift station short cycling?
