Find the Drip Before the Salesman Does

Builders loved home-run manifolds during the metro's housing boom, and the Manabloc was the panel of choice: one block, a dedicated line to every fixture, a quarter-turn valve for each. Smart layout. Mortal material. Polysulfone handles heat but slowly embrittles in chlorinated city water, and the rubber O-rings inside those valves sit motionless for decades, drying out in place.
Then you went to swap a toilet fill valve, turned a little blue handle for the first time since your home inspection, and started a drip that won't quit. So you snugged the nut. Maybe got a wrench. Nobody printed it on the panel, but those compression nuts are hand-tight only — a wrench cross-threads the plastic port, and one drip becomes two.
You didn't break your plumbing. Twenty years of chlorinated water did. You just happened to be holding the valve when it let go.
The $15,000 Repipe Pitch That Starts With One Dripping Port
Some shops run a routine when they see a gray manifold, and it works because you're standing there holding a towel. The tech mentions lawsuits. Says parts are discontinued. Declares everything connected to the panel suspect, then slides a whole-house repipe quote across your kitchen table — $15,000 is a number that gets attached to a single dripping port.
The mechanical truth: the panel is the wear item, not the lines radiating off it. The valves and the polysulfone body take the abuse; the PEX runs to your fixtures are usually still sound. A replacement manifold is a panel swap, not a whole-house repipe — and the gap between the two pays for a lot of commission.
How to spot the play: they won't price a panel-only option, they claim the adapters "aren't made anymore" (the transition fittings are current catalog items), and the quote expires today. How We Replace a Manabloc Without Wrecking the Wall Around It
Water off at the main, pressure bled at the lowest fixture, water heater shut down so it can't dry-fire. Then the step that separates a clean job from a crossed-line mess: every supply line gets tagged — hot or cold, which fixture — before anything comes loose. Lose track of a 30-port matrix and a hall bath ends up plumbed backwards.
We cut each line clean below the old ports — aged polysulfone can shatter, so it's a safety-glasses step — pull the failed panel, and mount the new manifold to the studs. A panel full of water is heavier than it looks. Every line lands on the correct port with the correct adapter for its material: polybutylene lines get PB-specific transition fittings, never standard PEX inserts. New PEX runs get ASTM F1960 expansion fittings — tubing stretched with a ProPEX expander, shrinking back over solid brass with the full inside diameter preserved.
Then pressure comes up slowly while we flashlight every port. Static pressure gets checked too: over 80 PSI, code (IPC 604.8) calls for a pressure reducing valve — on a panel rated for 100 PSI, that's not a suggestion. One Line Per Fixture, Two Connections, No Tees Buried in Your Drywall
Home-run plumbing earns its keep on fitting count. In trunk-and-branch, every tee and elbow is a connection, and most live inside walls or ceilings. In a home-run layout, each run has exactly two ends: the manifold port you can see and the fixture stop under the sink. Fittings are where plumbing leaks. A manifold moves them into daylight.
The shutoffs are the other half. When a supply line lets go, you close one labeled port and the rest of the house keeps water — no sprinting for the main in the dark. A dedicated half-inch line also holds less standing water than a fat trunk, so hot water reaches the tap faster.
Now the honest part. A manifold fed through a starved supply line is where the horror stories come from: feed 30 ports off a half-inch line and the shower dies every time the washer fills — the manifold gets blamed for the feed's sins. We size the feed at 1-inch or 3/4-inch using the same fixture-unit math as our full repipes. Red Clay Moves. PEX-A Moves With It.
Central Oklahoma sits on expansive red clay with two seasonal settings: pudding in May, pottery in August. It swells when soaked, shrinks when it bakes, and your foundation rides that swing every year — the same movement behind the slab leaks we dig up. Rigid pipe attached to a moving structure takes the stress at its weakest joint, usually one you can't see.
That's why we run PEX-A out of every manifold we set. It's the most flexible pipe in the PEX family, cross-linked with the Engel method, and it absorbs structural movement in the pipe body instead of at a fitting. Sweeping bends replace elbows. Expansion fittings grip tighter as the tubing's thermal memory clamps down over the brass. If a hard freeze catches a line, PEX-A can swell with the ice and usually survive — though we insulate attic runs and support horizontal pipe every 32 inches per code, because "usually survives" is not a winterization plan.
Maintenance Clock: Reading a Manifold's Age Without Turning Anything
An old gray panel that hasn't leaked yet gets one rule: leave the valves alone. Don't test them, don't "loosen them up" — stasis is all that's holding some of those O-rings together. Instead, put a flashlight on it once a year. Frosted crazing on the hot side, crust on the brass ports, dampness on the drywall below: any of those means the clock ran out.
Check static water pressure at an outdoor spigot yearly; above 80 PSI you need a PRV regardless. On a new manifold the rules flip — cycle each quarter-turn valve closed and open once or twice a year so the seals stay seated instead of fossilizing. Keep the wrench in the drawer: port nuts stay hand-tight, period. Selling the house? Inspectors flag original gray panels on sight — a documented replacement reads better than a mystery drip.

Can you replace just one valve on a Manabloc?

If my Manabloc is leaking, do I have to replace the pipes in my walls too?
Almost always, no. The panel takes the wear; the lines feeding your fixtures are typically sound, and we connect them to the new manifold with the correct transition fittings for their material. The exception is polybutylene at the end of its life — if that's what we find, we'll show you the pipe and talk repiping honestly.
Why did my manifold start dripping right after I touched the valve?

Do PEX manifold systems give you faster hot water?

Built right, no. Full-bore F1960 expansion fittings don't choke flow, and a 1-inch or 3/4-inch feed sized to your fixture count keeps every port supplied. The pressure complaints come from starved feed lines — a big panel choked through a half-inch supply. That's an installer failure wearing a manifold costume.
Are the little red and blue valve nuts supposed to be only hand-tight?
Yes. The compression nuts at the manifold ports are spec'd hand-tight by the manufacturer. A wrench cross-threads the plastic port and turns a drip into a stream. If a nut won't seal hand-tight, the seal underneath is gone — tightening harder only buys a bigger leak.
Why is PEX-A a good fit for Oklahoma's clay soil?
