Match the tool to the clog

Most of the "snake vs. jet" argument disappears once you know what's actually in the pipe. Here's the short version before we get into the machines and the con that rides on this question.

The two machines

What each machine actually does

A cable machine spins a steel cable with a cutting head down the line. On a 4-inch main we run a 3-inch or 4-inch expanding cutter. The head physically shears roots and bores through solid clogs. You manage the torque by pulling the cable back an inch every so often so the blade keeps spinning free instead of binding up. For heavy roots we step up to a bigger drum machine with a 3/4-inch inner-core cable and a C-cutter head, working it back and forth across the joint until the wall is scraped bare and the full diameter is open again. Then we check the work with several heavy toilet flushes.

Here's what a cable does not do: it cuts a channel through grease. The grease is still stuck to the wall. That's why a greasy line snaked in January is backing up again by spring.

A hydro-jet pushes high-pressure water through a nozzle instead of dragging a blade. Our jetter runs around 3,000 PSI at about 5.5 gallons a minute through a forged brass head, with a pulse feature that helps the hose crawl through a bend. That water scours the entire inside diameter — grease, sludge, scale, the whole film — not just a hole through the middle. That's the one job a jet does that a cable can't touch.

The catch is the same pressure that strips grease off good pipe will destroy bad pipe. A lot of older lines around the OKC metro are aging cast iron with longitudinal graphitic corrosion — the walls go brittle and rot out along the bottom. Some mid-century lines are Orangeburg, a tar-paper and fiber pipe that softens and ovals as it soaks up groundwater. Put 3,000 to 4,000 PSI into either one and you don't clean the pipe, you blow the bottom out of it. Modern schedule-40 PVC handles jetting fine. The only way to know which of those is buried in your yard is to look — and that's the camera, run in through the exterior cleanout so nobody has to pull a toilet to get access.

So: roots and hard single clogs go to the cable. Grease and recurring sludge on a sound pipe go to the jet. Everything goes to the camera first. That's the whole logic behind our drain and sewer work.

The tactic to watch for

The scam: jetting blind, then selling you a new sewer

The tell is simple. A tech wants to hydro-jet your main line and hasn't run a camera. That isn't confidence — it's a setup.

Here's how the bad version goes. They drop an aggressive, forward-cutting nozzle into an old cast-iron line and crank the pressure past 4,000 PSI on a pipe that was already channeling out along the bottom. The pressure finishes it off. Now the line that had a clog has a hole in it. Then they run the camera — pointed at the damage they just caused — and tell you the main is "cracked and collapsed" and has to be dug up and replaced. That quote starts somewhere north of $7,800 just for the excavation and can run past $15,000 to redo the whole line. The clog you actually called about would have taken a cable and part of an afternoon.

What we do instead is boring on purpose. The camera goes in first, so we can see what pipe you have before anything gets pressurized. If it's brittle cast iron or Orangeburg, we stop and tell you jetting is off the table — we cable it at controlled torque instead. If it's sound, we dial in the right pressure, jet it, and then run the camera again so you can watch the line run clear on the monitor. You get the footage. Nobody runs a pressure test on your pipe that doubles as a sales pitch.

The cost of waiting

What it costs to keep putting it off

Roots don't stop. A cable pass clears them today, but they grow back through the same joint, and every backup gets worse until raw sewage comes up through the lowest fixture in the house. Caught early, roots are a maintenance item — mechanical cutting, a foaming treatment, and a plan to repeat it. Left to run, that same line is the one a predator points a camera at and calls a five-figure replacement.

One timing detail almost nobody hears: when we cut heavy roots, the foaming treatment has to go on within about the first hour. Cut roots seal themselves behind a protective sap layer within a couple of hours, and after that the chemical can't reach the wood. Miss that window and the honest move is to wait several weeks for the roots to grow past the barrier and come back to treat it right — not to sell you a treatment that day that we know won't take.

Grease is the same story running the other way. Every low-flow toilet flush (1.28 gallons) has less water behind it to push waste through, so wipes and grease settle into the low spots, and OKC's hard water calcifies the mess into something a cable can only poke a hole through. Jet it once on a sound pipe and the wall comes clean. Keep snaking it and you're paying to clear the same clog two or three times a year. The blind-jet playbook ends at a $15,000 "your main has to come out" quote — nozzle first, camera second, backhoe third. The honest version is a camera you stand next to and watch, and a cable that clears the clog without ever pressurizing a rotten pipe. Same clog. One of those numbers has a comma in it. The other one is a repair.
