A drain snake is a drum machine spinning a steel cable with a cutter on the end. On a branch line, that's a 3/8-inch cable clearing a 1.5-to-2-inch pipe. On a 4-inch main, it's a heavier cable running a 3-inch or 4-inch cutter head. What the cable does is simple and it's the reason it's cheaper: it cuts a channel. It bores a path through the blockage so water moves again. For a single clog — a kid's toy, a wad of paper, one grease plug in a branch — that's the correct tool and there's no reason to reach for anything bigger.

A jetter is a different animal. It's a triplex pump driving water through a nozzle at high pressure — a shop machine like the RIDGID KJ-3100 runs 3,000 PSI at 5.5 gallons a minute; a trailer rig runs closer to 18 gallons a minute at 4,000 PSI. Instead of cutting one channel, the water hits the full circumference of the pipe and washes it. That's what you're paying the difference for: a bigger machine, real water volume, and a slower pass that cleans the wall back to its original inside diameter instead of just punching through the middle.

Here's where it matters for your wallet. A cable bored through a greased-up kitchen line will get you draining today. The grease it left on the walls re-coats within weeks and you're calling again. That's paying twice for the cheaper service. Jetting that same line washes the grease off, so the fix holds. On the flip side, jetting a line that had one soft clog is spending big-machine money on a small-machine problem. Neither tool is "better." They solve different failures, and the honest move is telling you which failure you have.

There's a third answer nobody upselling wants to give you: sometimes it's neither. If a line backs up on a schedule, the cause can be a belly or a reverse-pitch section where waste pools and never scours out. Oklahoma follows the plumbing code minimum of 1/4 inch of fall per foot for pipes 3 inches and smaller. A drain sitting flatter than that will clog no matter how many times it's cabled or jetted. It works because high-pressure water is only safe on a pipe that can take it. Older Oklahoma City and Edmond homes still have pre-1980 cast iron that's gone brittle from graphitic corrosion, or Orangeburg — a tar-paper pipe that softens and ovals underground. Push 4,000 PSI into a pipe like that with no camera check and the bottom blows out. A clog you could've managed becomes a "collapsed line," and the quote that follows runs $10,000 to $25,000 for a full replacement.

The tell is simple: the technician wants to jet before anyone has looked inside the pipe. An honest crew won't do that. We put a push-camera down the line first and check the walls. If it's brittle cast iron or Orangeburg, we stop and say so — high pressure will destroy it, and no amount of cleaning changes that.
