Your Main Line Just Backed Up. That's One Blocked Pipe Under the House — Not Automatically a New Sewer.
When your main line backs up, the single buried pipe that carries every drain in your house is blocked somewhere downstream. Waste and water have nowhere to go, so they rise back up and out the lowest opening first — a floor drain, a downstairs shower, or a first-floor toilet. Stop running water and get the line cleared at its cleanout.
What you're seeing and what clears it
From inside the house it reads like a catastrophe. Underground, it's usually one obstruction in one pipe, and most come out with a cable run through the right access point — no excavation, no new sewer. Knowing that is your first defense against the crews who need it to feel terminal.
Because every fixture empties into one shared line, which fixtures fail tells you where the blockage sits. If you're not sure it's the main line yet, start with the signs your main sewer line is clogged.

No row jumps straight to “replace the sewer.” Every one is a diagnosis first.
One pipe, gravity, and the lowest opening
Your main line — the building sewer — is the lowest piping in the drainage system. Under IPC 202 it's the part of the drain that runs about five feet beyond your exterior wall on the way to the city tap. Every branch in the house drops into that one gravity-fed pipe: no pump, no pressure. Waste moves only because the pipe is pitched downhill and the water behind it keeps scouring.
Block that pipe downstream and the water backs up until it finds the lowest unsealed opening and comes out there — which is why a clog forty feet out in the yard shows up as a flooded floor drain. Our customer Shonda Sanders described the whole-house version:
“both my toilets and all the showers and baths were not draining.”
Clearing it correctly means reaching the line through its cleanout, not through your toilet. Oklahoma's code (IPC 708.1.3, as amended here) is specific: “The junction of the building drain and the building sewer shall be served by a cleanout that is located at the junction or within 12 feet (3658 mm) of the developed length of piping upstream of the junction.” That access lets a drum machine with a 4-inch cutting head go down the 4-inch main, cut the blockage at full diameter, then confirm the fix with several heavy toilet flushes.
Why it backed up
A backup is a symptom, and the cause is one of a short list — each with a different real fix:
Roots at a joint. In older Edmond and OKC clay or cast-iron lines, decades of expanding and contracting soil crack the joints open and roots follow the moisture in. A cable cuts the mass but doesn't close the door it grew through, which is why these backups return. The fix is a full-diameter cut, a foaming root treatment, and a plan to keep it out.
A fatberg. Low-flow toilets lack the energy to carry “flushable” wipes, grease coagulates around them, and Oklahoma's hard water calcifies the mass into rock. It resists a standard cable — that's a job for controlled high-pressure jetting, on a pipe camera-checked as sound enough to take it.
A belly. A sagged section holds standing water and catches everything that floats past. Code (IPC 704.1) sets the fall that prevents it — at least a quarter-inch per foot on 3-inch and smaller pipe, an eighth-inch per foot on 4-inch and larger — but soil movement can defeat good pitch over time.
The pipe is failing. Cast iron rots from the inside when sewer gas and condensation form a weak acid that eats the top and drops the bottom out; Orangeburg, a mid-century tar-paper pipe, absorbs groundwater and ovals shut. Sometimes it really is the pipe. Detarius Fowler had exactly that:

One more is a safety line: a severe backup can be a utility cross-bore — a gas or fiber line a boring crew drilled straight through your sewer lateral without knowing it was there. That's why no one rams a heavy cutter blindly into a blocked main. A camera looks first.
The False Camera Scope
A stopped-up main line is one of the easiest moments in this trade to turn into a five-figure sale, and the play runs in two moves.
Move one is the fake clearing. The crew arrives on a cheap dispatch fee and runs a cable down the line — but with a tiny, roughly 1-inch spear blade inside a 4-inch pipe. It pokes a pinhole through the blockage, stagnant water trickles out, the drain seems to “work” for a minute, and nothing was actually cleared.
Move two is the camera. Now they run a scope and aim it into a wall of sludge, a knot of roots, or a cobweb so the monitor goes black. The dark blur becomes their evidence: they call it a collapsed pipe, or “that's dirt — your line is open to the soil.” The most brazen version plays a pre-recorded clip of a crushed clay pipe and tells you it's your yard. Then the quote lands — $7,800 to $30,000 to dig up and replace a line a cable would have cleared. This isn't rare here: one OKC homeowner reported a $14,000 estimate for a single clogged drain and paid a visit fee while the crew cleared nothing.
The tell is control of the screen. A crew using the camera as a sales prop won't let you watch the live feed, and they'll push a dig — or blind jetting — without a clean camera pass you can see. We do the reverse: you stand at the monitor, we point out harmless scale versus a real fracture, mark the exact spot in the yard with the camera's locator so any digging is surgical, and hand you the raw footage so you can get a second quote. A camera should be a diagnosis you can verify — that's the point of a sewer camera inspection done straight.
What waiting costs
A main-line backup runs the meter the whole time it sits. What comes back up is Class 3 black water — raw sewage, a genuine biohazard, not a mess you mop and forget. Let it keep rising and it saturates flooring and drywall; that remediation-plus-repair bill reaches $15,000 and up, and a backup that reaches a finished ceiling can become an $8,000-to-$20,000 job once structural damage and the “emergency” premium stack on. And a backup that was only poked open comes back on its own schedule. The price contrast, in one line

Keeping a cleared line clear
If roots were the cause, cutting them is round one, not the finish. Damaged roots seal themselves off with a protective sap within a couple of hours, so a foaming root treatment has to go on within about an hour of the cut — miss that window and the honest move is to wait six to eight weeks for fresh growth before treating. After that, a root-prone line wants a treatment about once a year to stay ahead of regrowth. If your cleanout is buried or awkward, a proper two-way exterior cleanout puts every future clearing out in the yard instead of through the house. None of that is a new sewer — it's maintenance on the pipe you already have.

No. Every sink, shower, toilet, or washer cycle adds water to a system with nowhere to send it, pushing more sewage out the lowest opening. Stop using water throughout the house, shut off the washer or dishwasher if it's mid-cycle, and clear the line before turning anything back on.
It's a capped access fitting at or within about 12 feet of where your building drain meets the building sewer, required by code (IPC 708.1.3) — often a short pipe with a screw cap near the house, in a flower bed, or just inside a garage or crawlspace. It's how the line gets cabled at full diameter without pulling a toilet. If yours is buried or missing, that alone is worth fixing so the next backup is a yard call, not a bathroom demolition.
Usually because the last “clearing” poked a hole through the blockage instead of cutting the pipe back to full diameter, or the real cause is still there — roots at a cracked joint, or a belly holding standing water.
