No. A whole-house repipe doesn’t touch most of your drywall. We open small, roughly foot-square access holes only where a new line drops to a fixture or a shutoff valve sits — mapped before the first cut. We make the clean squares; a drywall contractor patches them.
Surgical access versus a gutted house
The reason that answer matters is that “we have to open the wall to repipe” and “we have to open your whole house” are two different sentences, and predatory crews live in the gap between them. Why a repipe has to open the wall at all
You can’t run new water lines through solid wood studs without reaching them, and you can’t reuse the old holes the failed pipe came through. Two mechanical facts drive that, and both are written into code.
First, water piping has to be fastened to the building. It isn’t loose inside your walls — it’s strapped to the framing at set intervals so it can’t sag, whip, or hammer itself apart. A single-family home answers to the residential code on this, which requires piping “supported to ensure alignment and prevent sagging” (IRC §P2605.1). For PEX an inch and smaller, the table under that section sets the horizontal strap spacing at 32 inches — a fastener at least every 2.67 feet (IRC Table P2605.1). That is exactly why the old pipe can’t be pulled out of the wall like a shoelace: it’s clamped to the studs the whole way. It’s the same reason the new run can’t float free either — we have to get to the framing to fasten it. We walk through that in why the old pipe can’t just be pulled through the existing holes.
Second, we have to reach the shutoff valves and connections behind your fixtures. The residential code sets a floor on how small that access can be: concealed slip-joint connections — the tubular waste and trap fittings hidden in the wall — have to be reachable through “an opening that is not less than 12 inches (305 mm) in its smallest dimension” (IRC §P2704.1). That 12-inch floor is one of the places the roughly foot-square number comes from. You need a hole big enough for a hand and a tool, not a hole big enough to walk through.
And to be exact about which rulebook applies to your house: Oklahoma’s plumbing code sends “detached one- and two-family dwellings” up to three stories to the residential code (IPC §101.2). So the strap spacing and the access minimums above are the ones your repipe is actually held to — not a commercial standard borrowed to sound official.
What “surgical” actually means on your walls
Routing does most of the damage control before anyone picks up a saw. New PEX-A runs go up through the attic and drop down the wall cavities to each fixture, which keeps the openings at the drop points and the valves instead of scattered down every run. Where the line lands, we cut a clean square. Where a shutoff sits behind a sink or shower, we cut a clean square. That’s it — the cuts follow the map, and the map gets made before the first one is opened.
We cut those squares clean and true so a drywall contractor can set a patch and texture it back to match. We don’t hang and finish drywall ourselves — that’s a separate trade — and we say so up front instead of leaving it as a surprise at the end. Naming who closes the walls before the work starts is part of treating the house like it’s still someone’s home while we’re in it.

Here’s the tactic this post exists to name, because it’s one of the easiest to disguise as “thorough.”
A predatory crew opens your walls the fast way. To cut their own labor time and pad the margin, they rip out vast, jagged swathes of drywall down whole walls and across ceilings — not because the pipe needs it, but because ripping is faster than mapping and cutting clean. Then they leave. The gaping holes in the sheetrock are now your problem, and you get to hire a separate drywall contractor to rebuild large sections for a bill nobody mentioned when they quoted the job. On the worst version of it, a subcontracted labor force smashes through the walls and ceilings and abandons the house for someone else to close up.
The demolition isn’t a side effect of a big job. It’s the business model — externalized labor. Every square foot they don’t have to cut carefully is time they save and a cost they hand to you. That’s why the size and shape of the openings in a quote tells you more about the crew than the price does. A plan built on foot-square, mapped access cuts is a plan that respects that you still have to live behind those walls. A plan that treats your drywall as disposable is telling you where its priorities sit.
How to read the tell
You don’t need to be a plumber to spot this one. Ask the quote a single question: where are you going to cut, and how big are the openings? A crew that has actually planned the job can answer — this drop, that valve, roughly a foot square, here’s the count. A crew that’s planning to open everything and work fast will be vague, because “we’ll see when we get in there” is the honest translation of “we haven’t mapped it and we don’t intend to.”
The follow-up: who patches the drywall, and is that in this number? A straight answer is fine — most repipe crews, ours included, cut clean and leave the finishing to a drywall trade. A dodge is not fine. If the wall damage is being treated as an afterthought before the work even starts, it will be treated as your problem after.
