A repipe isn’t a repair — it’s a full replacement of the pressurized supply system, done because the pipe material itself has failed everywhere at once, not in one spot. In the Oklahoma City metro that usually means one of three things: the gray polybutylene run in houses plumbed between 1978 and 1995, galvanized steel rusted nearly shut from the inside, or thin-wall Type M copper pitted through by hard water. What actually happens, wall by wall

The old pipe never comes out. It can’t. The lines inside your walls are strapped to the studs to meet code, and on a slab foundation the originals are cast into concrete under your feet. Pulling them out like a string isn’t a thing that exists. So the failed pipe is abandoned where it lies, and a completely new path is built around it — which is exactly why a repipe doesn’t require excavating your home.

The new lines go overhead, not through your slab. The new system runs through the attic and drops down inside the wall cavities to each fixture. That routing is the whole reason a repipe stays clean: the long horizontal runs never enter a finished wall, so the only openings we make are where a pipe turns down to a fixture or a valve. Bypassing the slab means no one takes a jackhammer to your floor to chase a supply line.

PEX-A, joined with fittings that tighten as they set. We run PEX-A and join it with cold-expansion fittings: the tube is stretched with a tool, a solid brass fitting is slipped inside, and the pipe’s shape memory shrinks back down and grips it — a joint that keeps closing on itself as the material recovers. That method is a defined ASTM consensus standard (F1960), rated for pressurized hot and cold water up to 180°F, not a proprietary gimmick. Strapped to code, not draped over the joists. New pipe has to be supported at set intervals — 32 inches apart on horizontal runs and every 10 feet on vertical drops for the sizes in a house. The corner a speed-crew cuts is skipping the straps entirely, draping hundreds of feet of pipe straight across the attic trusses to save a few dollars in clamps and hours of overhead drilling. Unsupported pipe sags, rubs, and works its fittings loose over the years. Hangers aren’t optional trim; they’re what keeps the system where it was installed.

Built to take the attic and the winter. An Oklahoma attic in July pushes past 130 degrees, and PEX is pressure-rated for water across a temperature range — the hotter the water, the lower the allowable pressure — which is what lets it live up there for decades. On the cold end, the pipe’s maker states it can stretch up to three times its diameter before it bursts and rates it past 400 freeze-thaw cycles. That’s the behavior you want in a state that can drop below 20 degrees for days at a stretch.

It ends with a pressure test, not a handshake. The plumbing code doesn’t let the job finish on someone’s word. Once the system is complete, it has to be proved tight at the working pressure of the house and held for at least 15 minutes before it’s accepted — and that test happens while the walls are still open, so a weak joint shows up before anything gets closed over it. Here’s the pitch to watch for. Someone walks the house, points at a wall or a slab, and tells you a repipe means tearing out the drywall room by room or breaking up your floor to get at the pipe. The house, they say, essentially has to come apart to be replumbed.

That’s the tell of a crew that either doesn’t work overhead or profits from the wreckage. The dishonest version of leak work is “destructive discovery” — when a contractor lacks the tools to find and route pipe precisely, their only method is blunt force: cut open vast sections of wall, jackhammer exploratory holes in the slab, and bill it as demolition. On a repipe, the same move shows up as architectural vandalism dressed as thoroughness: rip out jagged swaths of drywall to lower the labor time, then hand you off to a separate drywall contractor for thousands of dollars you didn’t know were coming. The demolition isn’t a side effect of the repipe. On that model, the demolition is the product.
