A Repipe Is Worth It When the Whole Material Failed, Not When One Joint Did
A whole-house repipe earns its cost when the pipe material itself has failed across the entire system — polybutylene, galvanized steel scaling shut, or copper pitting through at multiple points. It is not worth it for one located leak on otherwise-sound pipe. That is a spot repair. The material and the failure pattern decide, not a sales pitch.
The verdict, by what is actually failing
That single distinction is the whole answer. Everything below is how we prove which side of it your house is on, so you can read the verdict the same way we do — before anyone opens a wall.
We repipe houses. We also walk away from repipe jobs, on the same day, when the pipe in the walls is sound and the failure is one fitting. Here is how the two outcomes split.

The top three rows share one thing: the material lost. Not a connection, not a fixture — the pipe wall itself, along its whole length. The bottom two share the opposite: one identifiable point gave out and everything around it is intact. A repipe is the right call for the first group and a waste of your money for the second.
Why “the material failed” is a real, checkable condition
“The pipes are old” is not a diagnosis. These three are.
Polybutylene. This is the clearest whole-material case in residential plumbing, and it is not our opinion — it is a court record. Polybutylene was manufactured from 1978 to mid-1995 and installed in up to 10 million U.S. homes. It fails from the inside: chlorine derivatives in municipal water oxidize the polymer and strip out its antioxidants, and the disinfectants make it flake apart at any location in the system. Because the attack is chemical and system-wide, a spot repair on polybutylene only moves the next burst downstream. That failure was so uniform that in the polybutylene class action (Cox v. Shell Oil), Shell Oil and a co-defendant agreed to contribute at least $950 million to provide relief to affected homeowners. Galvanized steel. Older galvanized supply lines corrode inward, packing the bore with rust and mineral scale until the flow at the tap is a trickle no fixture cleaning will fix. That is a whole-line condition by definition — the narrowing is everywhere the steel is. Type M copper. Copper is not automatically doomed, and that matters for the fork. Copper pinholes come from localized (pitting) corrosion driven by aggressive water chemistry — a spot phenomenon that shows up at individual points. One pinhole is a located leak. What separates a nuisance from a systemic case is the wall you started with. Type M copper has the thinnest wall of the three tube types, 0.028 inch at half-inch versus 0.040 inch for Type L, so it has the least metal to lose before the next pit perforates. When we find Type M that has already pitted through in several spots, the ones you can see are the front of a pattern, and a repipe is the honest recommendation. When we find one pinhole in an otherwise-clean run, it is a repair. Same metal, opposite verdicts — decided by the pattern, not the age.
The scam this question exists to answer
The reason “is it worth it to repipe your house” is even a search is that a whole industry sells the repipe as the answer to problems that are not repipe problems.
Here is the play, and it is documented, not hypothetical. A homeowner calls about one thing — a failed toilet flapper, a weeping SharkBite fitting, a single leak in otherwise healthy Type L copper. Instead of a plumber, a closing salesperson arrives and reframes the one leak as proof the entire system is toxic and about to flood the house. A common variant is worse: the technician opens wall cavities and disassembles the plumbing before giving a diagnosis, then refuses to put it back together, holding the wrecked, non-functional system over you until you sign. Either way, the exit is the same contract — a five-figure whole-house repipe for a problem that needed a single part.
That is repipe-as-universal-prescription, and it works because the number sounds authoritative and the homeowner has no way to challenge it in the moment. A single fixable leak is not a dead system, no matter how confidently someone standing in your torn-open wall says it is.
What we do instead
What we do instead is boring on purpose. We find the single point of failure before we cut anything, with the system still assembled and testable. So — is yours worth it?
If your supply lines are polybutylene and one has already let go, replacing the system is the call that stops you paying for the same failure twice. If your galvanized is strangled shut, or your Type M copper is pitting through in more than one place, the repipe pays for itself in leaks that never happen. If instead you have one leak at one joint and the rest of the run is solid, a repipe is money spent on pipe that did not need replacing. Fix the leak. Keep the pipe.
One number worth knowing — and one we will not put on the phone

Questions homeowners ask
Age is a risk marker, not the deciding factor. A 1985 house plumbed in copper that has never pitted can be in better shape than a 2003 house on polybutylene. What we replace is failed material, not old drywall. We check what the pipe actually is and how it is failing, then the verdict follows from that — not from the year on the deed.
Polybutylene is usually gray plastic (occasionally blue or black) stamped ‘PB2110,’ installed between 1978 and mid-1995. Galvanized is dull gray threaded steel that a magnet sticks to. Copper is the familiar reddish metal. You can often read the story at the water heater, under sinks, and where lines enter the wall. If you find a PB2110 stamp, that alone moves you toward the systemic-failure side of the table above.
Only if the pressure loss is coming from the pipe. Galvanized lines scaling shut choke pressure across the whole system, and repiping restores it. But if your low pressure is a failing pressure-reducing valve, a single clogged fixture, or flow-choking insert fittings at the joints, a repipe is the wrong tool — those are their own repairs. We find the cause first, because ‘repipe the house’ is an expensive way to solve a valve.
If the material is already a known systemic case — polybutylene, choked galvanized, widely pitted copper — an open-wall remodel is the cheapest window you will ever get, because the access work is already done. If the existing pipe is sound copper, open walls do not change the verdict: sound pipe is still sound, and you would be replacing good material for no mechanical reason. The remodel changes the cost of access, not whether the pipe has failed.
