Fix the Broken Section, or Replace the Whole Line? The Reason It Broke Decides — Not the Salesman
Usually we can cut out just the broken section and splice in new pipe — if the rest of the line is sound. What forces a full replacement isn't the leak, it's the material: polybutylene, corroded galvanized steel, and dezincifying brass fail everywhere at once, so patching one spot only buys you a few feet.
Match the symptom to the real failure
A water line springs a leak, and the first quote you get is for the whole system. That's the moment to slow down. Whether one leak means a repair or a replacement comes down to a question a good plumber answers with a camera, a pressure gauge, and the stamp on the side of your pipe.

What actually decides it: the pipe, not the puddle
The honest split isn't “cheap fix versus expensive fix.” It's “sound pipe that failed at one spot” versus “a material that's failing along its whole length.”
When a section repair is the honest call
A freeze burst is one clean split. Water expands about 9% when it turns to ice. The ice plug becomes a hydraulic piston, driving pressure toward the nearest closed valve until the line ruptures — and it ruptures downstream of the ice, not at the plug itself. So a freeze failure is usually one split in an otherwise good line. Cut it out, join in a new section, done — there's no reason to replace pipe the ice never touched.
Water hammer is a pressure problem wearing a pipe problem's costume. If your pipes bang when a faucet or washer shuts and you can see the line jump, that's Joukowsky shock — a shockwave slamming the pipe every time flow stops fast. It breaks joints and blows fittings off, but the pipe isn't worn out; it's being beaten. Normal household supply pressure runs 60–80 PSI. When we put a gauge on a line that's hammering itself apart and read 110 PSI, the answer is a new PRV, not new pipe. Code backs this up: IPC 604.5 limits how far a fixture supply pipe can run unanchored — no more than 30 inches to the fixture — because over-long, unstrapped flex lines kink and fatigue until they burst; IPC 308.5 sets how often a line must be supported at all. An unsecured pipe that threw a fitting gets strapped down, not torn out end to end. The quote to “replace the pipe” over a banging line runs $2,000 to $5,000. The real repair is an inexpensive arrestor and a pressure adjustment.
A screw through a pipe is a patch, not a project. When a pipe runs within 1.5 inches of a stud edge, IPC 305.8 requires a nail plate so a drywall screw can't find it later. Skip the plate and a screw does find it — one leak at one puncture. We patch the spot and add the missing plate. A single copper pinhole is the same story: a spot repair plus a look at why it pinholed, not evidence your whole house needs re-plumbing.
When the whole line really has to go
Some failures aren't a spot at all — the material itself is done, and a patch just relocates the next leak.
Galvanized steel closes up from the inside. The zinc coating wears out, the bare steel oxidizes, and rust crystals grow inward like plaque in an artery — choking the diameter and eventually eating through the wall. Rust-colored water and falling pressure at every tap means the failure is the entire run, not one hole. One new coupling leaves the rust in every foot you didn't touch.
Polybutylene shears without warning. If your pipe carries the PB2110 stamp, the chlorine and chloramine in city water have been attacking the resin from the inside for years, cracking it in ways you can't see from outside. Under ordinary 60–80 PSI it finally lets go in a full longitudinal shear — a split, not a weep, and a lot of water fast. Once one section of poly shears, the rest is the same age, same chemistry, same countdown. A spot repair on polybutylene is a fresh coupling between two lengths of pipe that are both already failing. That's the line that earns a real replacement — which is what whole-house repiping is for.
Dezincifying brass crumbles. White, chalky buildup on a brass fitting that flakes apart when touched means the zinc has leached out, leaving a porous copper skeleton — replace the affected fittings or section.
The Oklahoma version: a leak under the slab
In Edmond and the metro, the failure that scares homeowners most is a slab leak — a supply line leaking under the concrete. Our expansive red clay swells when it's wet and shrinks when it's dry, pressing on the pipe unevenly until a copper line abrades through or a joint shears. The leak feeds more water into the clay, the clay heaves harder, and the foundation starts to move.
The honest fix here is often not jackhammering the floor. Cutting a post-tension slab risks striking a cable carrying around 30,000 pounds of tension — dangerous and expensive. In a lot of homes we can abandon the bad under-slab run and reroute a fresh line overhead through the attic, then sheath the copper in an inexpensive plastic sleeve so the clay and concrete can't abrade it again. That's a targeted slab leak repair, not a demolition.

The play to watch for: condemning the whole system over one fault
There's a specific hustle behind most “you need a whole repipe” quotes, and it has a name: System Replacement Fraud. A tech condemns an entire system over one minor, localized fault — claims the parts are obsolete, or that “code” forces a full replacement — and converts a single leak into a $10,000 to $25,000 repipe.
You can spot it. The tech diagnoses from across the room. They won't show you the failed section or hand you the camera. And they can't tell you what caused the leak, because “your pipes are old” isn't a cause.
What we do instead: show you the pulled section or the camera feed, read the material stamp, and name the mechanism — freeze split, water hammer, screw puncture, or a material that's genuinely failing everywhere. Sound pipe that failed at one point, you get a repair. Material's done, we say so and show you why. What waiting costs
The real cost of ignoring a small water-line leak isn't the pipe — it's everything the water touches. Under a slab, a leak nobody fixes keeps pumping water into that expansive clay. The clay heaves, the foundation shifts, and what started as one section of pipe turns into cracked drywall, sticking doors, and a foundation bill. Left long enough, that's the $20,000-plus outcome — a slab leak that moved the foundation — and some homeowners end up holding a $15,000 to $30,000 quote for a full slab repipe with a foundation-repair referral stapled to the back.
Catch the same leak early and it's still a section repair. The warning signs are cheap to notice: a jump in the water bill, a warm spot on the floor, the sound of water running with every fixture shut off. We won't hand you a fake “replace your pipes every so many years” schedule — a sound line runs for decades. The clock that matters is how long a live leak sits, not how old the pipe is.
One number worth remembering
The whole-house repipe quote for a single, localized failure runs $10,000 to $25,000. The same leak, when the rest of the line is sound, is a cut-out section, a new coupling, and — if water hammer caused it — an arrestor.

Questions homeowners ask
A section repair passes inspection when it's done to standard — the right material, proper support, and a permit where the work calls for one. Code doesn't force you to replace an entire line because one section failed; it only requires that whatever goes in meets code. A plumber who says “code makes you repipe” over a single leak is selling, not citing.
That depends entirely on the material. A copper or PEX line that split in a hard freeze failed at one spot because ice found one spot — the rest is fine, and a section repair holds. Polybutylene and old galvanized steel are different animals: they degrade along their whole length, so the next failure is already loading up somewhere you can't see. That's the line worth replacing.
Often, yes. For a leak under the slab, we can frequently abandon the bad run and reroute a new line overhead instead of jackhammering the floor and risking the post-tension cables in it. For a yard line, we get to the failure point rather than trenching the entire path when the rest of the pipe is sound. The goal is to touch only what's broken. Our water line repair work starts there.
Ask three things: show me the failed section, what's the pipe made of, and what caused it to fail. A straight answer names a mechanism — a freeze split, water hammer, a screw through the pipe, or a material like polybutylene that's failing everywhere. “Your pipes are old” is not a diagnosis. If they can point to a PB2110 stamp or rust-choked galvanized steel, a replacement is honest. If they can't, you're looking at a repair.
