Trenchless Pipe Replacement Has Real Downsides — a Liner Is Only as Good as the Pipe It's Cured Inside
The main disadvantages are that a cured liner copies the host pipe's exact shape, so it can't fix a sag or bad grade; a cured liner and a slipline both leave a slightly smaller inside diameter, while pipe bursting is the exception — it drags in new pipe and keeps or increases capacity; a badly broken section still has to be dug up first; and the fixed setup costs make a short run expensive per foot. Trenchless only works when the old pipe is still structurally sound.
The methods, and what each one actually costs you
“Trenchless” isn't one job — it's three, and most of the honest verdicts already live on their own pages. The one rule under all of it: the pipe you're lining is not a bystander
Every trenchless pitch sounds like the pipe underground stops mattering the moment the liner goes in. The engineering says the opposite. The ASTM standard that governs cured-in-place pipe puts it in one line: the design thickness of the liner is largely a function of the condition of the existing pipe. A state engineering manual built on that standard says the first step in designing the job is identifying the condition of the existing pipe — not measuring for a liner.
That condition sets everything. A pipe the standard calls “partially deteriorated” still holds its round shape and still carries the soil load around it; it may have lengthwise cracks and up to ten percent distortion of its diameter. That is trenchless's real lane. Push past ten percent distortion and the standard itself says a different method is required. When a pipe is “fully deteriorated” — missing sections, shape gone, walls corroded through — the liner stops being a repair and becomes the entire structural pipe, expected to carry every load by itself as if the old pipe weren't there.
A cured liner and a slipline both leave the finished line a little smaller inside than the one you started with — pipe bursting is the exception, because it drags in new pipe and keeps or increases the capacity. A cured liner is a real added wall bonded to the host pipe, not a paint coating — after the resin cures you get a new pipe with a slightly smaller inside diameter. With sliplining that shrink is the single biggest issue on the table, which is why the flow capacity of the smaller pipe has to be checked before anyone commits to it.
The one thing no liner fixes is grade. A liner takes the shape of and fits tightly to the existing pipe — so a sag stays a sag, cured in place. If the low spot is failed cast iron under your house, that's its own decision, laid out in lining versus replacing cast iron inside the house. If it's a bellied sewer line in the yard, the yard sewer verdict covers it. Both come down to the same physics: you can seal a belly, but you can't lift it with resin.
A liner can also come out of the ground wrong. The trade's own installation spec lists the flaws a finished liner gets rejected for: dry spots, pinholes, major wrinkles, and delamination. A camera pass after curing has to prove the liner is free of lifts, holes, and leaks — because inversion and curing can leave every one of those.

That look is step one, not an upsell.
The biggest myth is that trenchless means no excavation, ever. Both the standard and the trade spec kill that. Where a pipe has lost more than forty percent of its cross-section, the standard says that spot gets dug up and point-repaired before any liner goes in. The trade spec says a broken, collapsed, or sagging section has to be corrected first with open-cut repair. Pipe bursting needs dug insertion pits at both ends just to begin, and if the camera finds a sag or the wrong host material, that becomes a separate dig at a separate charge. Trenchless narrows the digging. It does not erase it.
Trenchless also carries costs that don't shrink just because your run is short. On a public bid, mobilization is a lump-sum item generally held to five percent of the whole job, billed the same whether the pipe is ten feet or a hundred. Spread across a short section, that fixed overhead is why a small trenchless repair can cost more per foot than a big one. When “no-dig” becomes the whole sales pitch
Trenchless earns its keep on the right pipe. It gets weaponized on the wrong one. The tactic is simple: sell the liner as a flawless, universal fix and skip the part where the camera disqualifies the pipe. A crew that leads with “no-dig, no demolition, done this afternoon” and never shows you the inside of your pipe is selling the method, not fixing your problem.
The clearest version is a liner sold into a pipe that can't hold one. A collapsed or bellied line gets a resin liner shot straight through it. The video afterward looks smooth and white, so the homeowner believes the problem is gone. But the liner cured in the exact shape of the sag — the standing water and the backups come right back within months. And the warranty on that job is written to cover only the liner itself, not “pre-existing grade anomalies or bellies.” You paid to seal the defect in place. The dig you were trying to avoid is still coming, on top of what you already spent.
The honest verdict
Strip the sales language and the rule is short.
- It's the wrong call — or a dig-first job — when the pipe has lost its shape, is missing its bottom, holds a belly, or has given up more than forty percent of its cross-section.
- Trenchless is the right call when the host pipe is still structurally sound — round, carrying its soil load, failing only from lengthwise cracks or root intrusion at the joints, inside that ten-percent-distortion window.
- On that pipe, a liner or a burst is a clean, less-destructive fix, and we'll say so.
There is no way to know which pipe you have from the street. The answer depends entirely on what the camera shows, which is exactly why the standards make diagnosing the existing pipe step one.

Here's the figure that should make you slow down: crews pushing trenchless as a cure-all have sold homeowners $18,000 to $25,000 in liners for pipes that were already collapsed or bellied — the exact pipes the engineering says can't be lined.
