A Snake Opens a Grease Line. It Doesn’t Clean One.
Not for good. A drain cable can force a passage through a grease blockage and get water running again, but the grease lining the pipe never leaves — so the opening fills back in within weeks. Grease is a coating on the wall, not a plug in the middle, and washing a coating off takes a hydro-jet, not a cable.
That’s the short answer, and it’s the same one we give on our hydro-jetting page. Here’s the part that page doesn’t have room for: what grease in a drain line actually is, why a cable can’t get it out, and the one situation where a cable is still exactly the tool to reach for.
Grease doesn’t clog a pipe the way a toy or a wad of paper does
A hard object drops in and stops the flow at one spot. Grease works in slow motion, and it changes state along the way. Here’s the path it takes from your sink to a solid blockage.

A single restaurant can produce between 800 and 17,000 pounds of grease a year, by the EPA’s own figure. A house sends far less, but the same physics run on your kitchen line: warm fat in, cooled fat on the wall.
A cable opens the middle. It can’t wash the wall.
A drain cable is a flexible steel cable with a cutting or auger head on the end. Push it into a grease blockage and it does exactly what it’s made to do — it opens a passage straight through the middle and lets the backed-up water drain. What it can’t do is touch the grease lining the rest of the pipe. That coating runs the full circumference of the wall, and a cable only ever contacts a narrow path through the center of it.
So drainage comes back and the line looks fixed. But an opening carved through a coating is still ringed by that coating on every side. Warm water keeps running over it, more grease keeps separating out onto it, and the passage closes over again. On a line where the deposit has already bonded with calcium and set hard, a cable can skip across the top of it without taking much off at all — which is why grease comes back after a cable clears it.
Washing the wall is a different physical action. A hydro-jet drives water out of a nozzle under high pressure in a spray that reaches the entire inside surface of the pipe at once, cutting the grease off the wall and flushing it downstream. It isn’t clearing a path through the blockage — it’s removing the material that forms the blockage. That’s how a jet restores the full bore, and it’s the difference between a line that drains today and a line that’s actually clean.
Grease almost never travels alone, either. Cooking fat congeals with wipes and other things flushed down toilets into one solid mass — a fatberg. London’s Whitechapel fatberg, pulled out of a sewer in 2017, weighed an estimated 130 tonnes and ran more than 250 metres, according to the London Museum that later studied it. That’s the same coating on your kitchen line, given years and a big enough pipe. A cable was never going to move it.
The scam: putting a grease line on a payment plan
Here’s how a grease line becomes a recurring bill. A shop shows up with a cable, opens the passage, water drains, everyone’s happy for a while. A few weeks or months later the line backs up again — because, as you now know, the grease on the wall was never removed. They come back, run the cable again, collect again, and pencil in the next visit. The line clears every time and clogs every time, and the return trip gets sold to you as maintenance.
None of that is maintenance. It’s an annuity — a bill that comes due on a cycle while the actual problem sits untouched. The buildup stays put between visits, still bonding with calcium and hardening, still narrowing the pipe, quietly getting worse underneath the temporary flow. A cable will never end that cycle on a grease line, because a cable can’t do the one thing that ends it: get the grease off the wall.
We scope first, then wash
What we do instead is look before we cable anything. We put a camera down the line to confirm it’s grease and to check whether the pipe is sound enough to take the pressure — the same scope-first rule we hold to on an older line that might not survive a jet. If it’s grease and the pipe can handle it, we wash the wall so the buildup is gone, not parted. The aim is a line that stays open, not one that’s already booked to close again.
When a cable is exactly the right tool
None of this makes a drain cable a bad tool. It’s the right tool for most of what clogs a house drain. A wad of toilet paper, a hair mass in a bathroom branch, a small object, a soft obstruction sitting in a line — a cable clears those cleanly, and a jet would be more machine than the job needs. A cable is also how roots get opened up before they’re treated.
The whole point is picking the tool that fits what’s actually in the pipe, which we lay out in full on when a line needs a snake versus a jet. Grease is the one case where the cable comes up short, and it comes up short for a physical reason, not a sales reason: grease is a coating, and you can’t cable a coating off a wall. Almost everything else, a cable handles.
One tool bills you again. The other doesn’t have to.

We won’t put a number on grease work before a camera has been down the line, because the honest cost depends on what’s actually there — how much of the pipe is coated, whether it’s sound enough to jet, and whether there’s a cleanout to reach it through. The one thing we can tell you up front is that a line cleaned once is cheaper to live with than a line opened over and over.

Because it doesn’t stay a liquid. It leaves your sink warm and flowing, but as the wastewater cools moving down the line, the grease separates back out of the water and settles on the pipe wall, where it solidifies. Hot water can soften grease right where it enters, but the water cools as it travels, and the grease separates out and sets again deeper in the line — usually somewhere harder to reach. Melting a coating in one spot just relocates it to the next cold stretch of pipe.
