Repair a Slab Leak or Reroute the Line? One Located Pinhole Isn't a Whole-House Repipe.
Neither is automatically right. Repair the failed section when one located leak sits in an otherwise sound line. Reroute — abandon the in-slab pipe and run a fresh line overhead — when the same line has leaked more than once, is at the end of its life, or sits in a post-tension slab that's dangerous to open.

Why the pipe failed under your floor
Oklahoma's red clay is the villain nobody quotes you for. It absorbs water and swells, then contracts hard in a drought, and it can move up to 15% by volume doing it. Those heaving forces exceed the tensile strength of the rigid joints buried in and under your slab. Foundation heave shears vertical risers and cracks the concrete, and a cracked slab drags on the copper and PEX water lines cast into it.
The other common failure is quieter: friction. A copper line laid against concrete and aggregate rubs a little more every time it heats, expands, cools, and contracts. Years of that wears a pinhole straight through the wall of the pipe. You get hot spots on the floor, a water bill that climbs for no reason, and — once it's bad enough — the sound of water running when nothing in the house is on.
You don't fix any of that by guessing. We pinpoint the leak first with acoustic listening gear, thermal imaging, and a high-resolution camera like the Ridgid SeeSnake Standard DSL, then triangulate the exact spot. Nobody should open concrete until that spot is marked. A plumber who wants to start jackhammering before he's located the leak is telling you something about how he works.
Option 1: repair the section
If the diagnosis says one isolated failure in a line that's otherwise sound, you fix that one section. We saw-cut a tight opening in the slab over the marked spot, cut out the failed length of pipe, splice in new, pressure-test it, and close the floor back up. One access point. The rest of your plumbing stays exactly where it is.
This is the right call more often than the industry wants you to believe. A single pinhole on an otherwise-sound copper line is a repair. It is not evidence that every foot of pipe in the house is dying.
The one thing that changes this math is a post-tension slab. Those foundations are held in compression by steel cables tensioned to around 30,000 pounds each. Cut into one blindly and you release that energy — it's a genuine safety hazard, not a drywall inconvenience. So before we open a post-tension floor, we confirm the slab type and the cable layout. If opening it can't be done safely over the leak, we don't force it. We reroute.
Option 2: reroute the line
A reroute — a bypass repipe — abandons the failed pipe in the slab and runs a brand-new line up into the attic and back down through the walls to the fixtures it feeds. The floor never gets touched. On a post-tension slab, or on a copper run that's already leaked more than once, that's usually the better long-term move: you're not chasing the next pinhole in a worn-out line, and you're not gambling on where a cable is.
Done right, a reroute respects the same forces that killed the original pipe. Where the new line passes through framing, it gets nail-plate protection so a future drywall screw can't find it. And any pipe passing through a foundation wall has to be isolated from the building's movement — the code that governs it, IPC 305.3, is blunt about the detail: the sleeve 'shall be two pipe sizes greater than the pipe passing through the wall.' That gap is what keeps the foundation from shearing the pipe the way it sheared the last one. It's the kind of step that costs a few minutes and gets skipped by crews being paid to move fast.
How a repair-or-reroute call gets flipped into a $30,000 repipe
Here's the tactic to watch for. It has a name in the trade: System Replacement Fraud — condemning an entire system over a minor, fixable fault to force a five-figure replacement.
It runs like this on a slab leak. The tech drops a camera in, aims it at a superficial rust flake or a harmless bit of scale, and declares the whole system has suffered 'channel rot' and is leaking under your house. Then comes the pitch: a whole-house slab repipe, frequently priced past $30,000. The ugliest part is what happens after you sign. Plenty of these operators never do the full replacement they sold — they tunnel under the foundation edge, swap a three-foot section with cheap couplings, and pocket the difference on a job you were told required tearing out every line in the slab.
The camera is the weapon, so make it work for you. An honest tech stands you at the monitor, shows you the difference between normal scale and an actual fracture, and hands you the raw footage on a USB so you can get a second quote. The predator won't let you watch the live push — some run pre-recorded footage of a crushed pipe that isn't even your line. If he won't let you stand next to the screen, ask what's on the tape he doesn't want you seeing.
Repair-or-reroute is a real diagnostic decision with two legitimate answers. 'Everything under your slab is dead' is almost never one of them.
What waiting actually costs
A slab leak is not a leak that holds steady while you think about it. The water it puts into the clay keeps feeding the swell-and-shrink cycle that's already moving your foundation. Left alone, that's how you go from one warm spot on the floor to cracked drywall, doors that won't latch, uneven floors, and a foundation shift that runs $20,000 and up on its own — before anyone touches the plumbing.
That's the trap. Wait long enough and the question stops being 'repair or reroute' and becomes 'repipe plus a foundation-repair referral,' a package that lands in the $15,000 to $30,000 range. The pipe fix was always the cheap part. The foundation is what gets expensive, and it gets expensive on a clock.
