A Small Gas Leak Is a Call-Today Problem, Not an Explosion Waiting to Happen
No. Natural gas only ignites when it reaches 5 to 15 percent of the air in a room and meets an open flame or spark. A small fitting leak rarely gets near that. If you smell gas, leave, call 911 and ONG, then hire a plumber with a manometer — not a panic repipe.
What you're noticing, and what to do about it
The question almost always arrives the same way. Someone catches a faint rotten-egg smell near the water heater, remembers every news story about a house that blew up, and starts bracing for the worst. That fear is reasonable. Gas explosions are real. But a smell at one appliance and an explosion are two different physical events, separated by two conditions a small leak usually does not meet.

The two conditions gas needs to ignite
Natural gas does not burn at any concentration you hand it. The authoritative chemical-hazard card for methane lists its explosive limits as 5 to 15 percent by volume in air. Below 5 percent the mixture is too lean to catch. Above 15 percent it is too rich. Only inside that band will it go.
The second condition is a source. That same card states plainly that gas-air mixtures in the flammable range are explosive — the hazard is the mixture plus an ignition source, not the presence of gas by itself. A room has to hold enough gas to cross the 5 percent floor, and something has to spark it. A fitting seeping into open household air, with the furnace off, generally meets neither.
That is the mechanical reason a small leak is not an imminent explosion. It is also the reason the utility's first instruction is to avoid anything that could spark. When ONG tells you not to flip a light switch or ring a doorbell, that is not superstition. It is removing the ignition source from an equation that needs both halves.
Why “small” usually means one fitting
A residential gas smell is frequently nothing more than a loose union or degraded pipe dope at the water heater or furnace gas cock. Pipe dope is the sealant brushed onto the threads of a joint. It dries and shrinks over years of heat cycling, and a joint that was gas-tight when it was installed starts to weep a little. That is a fitting seep. It is the low end of what “a leak” can mean, and it is the most common thing behind a faint, localized odor at one appliance.
A failed pipe is a different animal — an open line, a cracked fitting, a joint that came apart. That is rarer, and it is the exact scenario the leave-and-call procedure below exists for. The point is that “I have a gas leak” covers a wide mechanical range, from a joint that needs one wrench and fresh sealant to a genuine failure. The smell alone does not tell you which one you have. A pressure test does.
Why the smell is not a gauge
Natural gas has no odor of its own. ONG adds mercaptan — the sulfur compound behind the rotten-egg smell — specifically so a leak announces itself. Federal pipeline rules go further and require the gas be odorized so a person with a normal sense of smell can detect it at one-fifth of the lower explosive limit. One-fifth of that limit is roughly 1 percent gas in air. You are built to smell it long before it can burn.
That cuts both ways, which is why smell is a poor size gauge. A strong odor does not prove the concentration is anywhere near the flammable band. And a faint or absent odor does not prove the line is tight — underground, the soil can strip the mercaptan before the gas reaches your nose. The two ways homeowners get this wrong
There are two failure directions here, and they pull in opposite directions.
The first is ignoring it. A faint smell that comes and goes gets rationalized away for weeks. A seep does not fix itself, and living with an odor means living without knowing whether it is the small thing it probably is or the larger thing it occasionally is. That uncertainty is the real cost, and it is avoidable — it is a phone call.
The second is panic-buying. This is the more expensive mistake, because there is an industry built to trigger it.
The scam: turning a fitting seep into a whole-house emergency
The play runs on the fear you walked in with. A technician arrives on a faint-odor call, waves an uncalibrated combustible-gas detector vaguely around the attic until it chirps, shuts off the meter at the street, and declares that the entire black iron pipe system under the house is rotted out, stripped of threading, and structurally compromised. Then comes the red tag and the pitch: a whole-house gas line repipe in corrugated stainless steel, presented as the only thing standing between your family and a fireball.
Almost none of that follows from a chirping detector. An uncalibrated instrument tells you gas is present, not that it is coming from every joint in the house, and certainly not that the pipe is condemned. The fear does the selling. The homeowner, already primed to imagine the worst, signs.
What actually isolates a leak
What actually isolates a leak is pressure, not theater. We segment the piping with isolation valves, put the system under test pressure, and watch the gauge — the manometer drop test that either proves a system tight or points to the one joint that is not. What to do, in order
If you smell gas inside and it is faint and localized to one appliance, you have time to act calmly: open a window if it is easy to reach on your way out, avoid touching any switch or flame, step outside, and call a plumber who pressure-tests.
Once ONG shuts the meter, the supply is cut and the immediate danger is over. That is the moment the pressure comes off the decision, too. You are no longer choosing under duress. You have time to hire a plumber who finds the exact leak, instead of accepting the first repipe quote handed to you at the worst possible moment.
One number worth holding onto
The gap between the two responses to a fitting seep is not small.

The physical problem is often the same joint. Only the diagnosis is different. That is the whole reason a manometer exists. It replaces the guess that a scared homeowner can be sold on with a reading that either holds or drops.

No, and this trips up a lot of people. A carbon monoxide alarm senses carbon monoxide, which is a byproduct of a gas appliance burning incompletely — not raw natural gas leaking from a fitting. A methane leak can be well underway with the CO alarm silent. Your nose, which is what the added mercaptan odor is for, is the front-line detector for a raw leak. If you want a device, it has to be a combustible-gas detector, which is a different instrument.
Anything that can spark. The full step list is in “What to do, in order” above, and the reason behind every item on it is the same one: the leak alone is not the fire — the spark is the other half of it. Leave and make the call from outside rather than trying to clear the air yourself.
An open flame or a switch arc is a genuine ignition source, which is exactly why the utility says to avoid them. What has to happen alongside it is concentration: the gas in that space has to climb into the flammable band before it can catch. A small seep venting into an open room usually stays well below it, which is why it does not ignite the moment the water heater fires. Removing the spark is still the right move, because it costs you nothing and it keeps both halves of the equation apart.
By finding the one joint that is actually leaking instead of condemning the whole house on a hunch.
