The other half of the problem is you. Spend enough time around a smell and you stop registering it — olfactory fatigue sets in after prolonged exposure to gas odor, which is why the person who's been home all day is often the last to notice. A strong competing odor can mask it outright.
Then there's the plain fact that not every nose works the same. A gas utility lists it directly: loss of smell, olfactory fatigue, colds, sinus conditions, or allergies can each lower your ability to detect a leak. So can common substances — tobacco, alcohol, medications, or narcotics can lessen the ability to smell odorized gas. A head cold is enough to switch the warning system off without anyone deciding to ignore anything.
What actually proves a line is tight
Because the smell can fail from either end, it is a prompt, not a verdict. The only thing that proves a gas system is leak-free is pressure. We isolate the piping, put it under test pressure, and watch a gauge — the manometer drop test that either holds steady, proving the line tight, or drops, pointing to the joint that isn't.
The people who exploit the smell — in both directions
Because so much rides on a signal that isn't dependable, the smell gets worked from two opposite angles.
The first is false reassurance. Someone gives the line a sniff, maybe waves a cheap detector for show, and tells you it's fine — no test, no gauge, just a confident nose and a charge for the visit. If the real leak is underground, or your sense of smell is down, or the odorant faded inside the piping, "I don't smell anything" is worth nothing. A clean bill of health that skips the pressure test isn't a diagnosis — it's a guess, and it sends a real leak back out of sight.
