What It Costs to Replace Cast Iron Under a Slab — and Why Nobody Can Tell You Over the Phone
There's no flat price for this. Replacing cast iron drain lines under a slab is set by three things a camera has to show first: how deep the pipe sits, how many feet of it have actually failed, and whether we reach it by tunneling from outside or cutting through the floor. A phone number is a guess.
What actually sets the price
That's the honest answer, and it's the whole reason the cast iron replacement page tells you to hang up on a plumber who reads you a slab price before seeing the pipe. Below is what actually moves the number, in plain mechanical terms, so the next quote you get is one you can check.
Three variables do most of the work. Everything else — restoration, fixtures, the drive — rides on top of these.

Why depth is the hinge
Depth is the variable people underestimate, because from the surface a pipe at 3 feet and a pipe at 7 feet look identical. They aren't.
Once the line sits 5 feet or deeper, the crew can't just dig a clean vertical hole and drop in. Federal excavation rules require a cave-in protective system at that depth — shoring, a trench box, or laying the trench walls back at a safe angle — before a person is allowed to work in it (OSHA 29 CFR 1926.652). In Oklahoma's ground that last option costs the most concrete. Once our red clay is dug and disturbed, it's the loosest soil class the code recognizes, and the walls have to be cut back a foot and a half sideways for every foot of depth — a 34-degree slope (OSHA Subpart P, Appendix B). A pipe twice as deep isn't twice the job. The hole gets wider in every direction, and every extra square foot of opening is concrete that has to come out and go back.
Tunnel from outside, or cut the floor
The second big fork is access, and it's the one the cast iron page names directly: tunneling versus breaking concrete.
Tunneling means we mine a horizontal path to the failed pipe from outside the foundation and never open your finished floor. It keeps the mess and the dust outside, but it's slow, careful hand-work under the slab.
Breaking through the interior slab is sometimes the shorter path to the pipe — but it happens inside the house, and that changes the rules. Cutting concrete indoors throws off respirable silica, so the work has to be done with a saw that feeds water to the blade and with the dust contained, not a dry jackhammer running in a closed room (OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1153). Slower, wetter, and more setup than a number over the phone accounts for.
There's one more thing under some newer floors: a post-tension slab. Those have steel strands stretched tight through the concrete, and a single half-inch strand is jacked to roughly 33,000 pounds of tension (AMSYSCO, post-tension strand properties). Hit one blind with a jackhammer and that stored force lets go all at once — it can crack the floor clear across the room. A real crew locates the tendons before any concrete comes up. That's not an upsell; it's the difference between opening a hole and detonating your floor.
We price after the camera, not before it
There's a reason we won't quote this sight-unseen beyond the honest range above. The International Plumbing Code — the code the replacement itself has to answer to — requires that when an entire drainage system is replaced, the under-slab drains be examined internally first, to confirm the pipe is sloping the right direction, isn't broken, isn't blocked, and is sized for the load (IPC §703.4). A flat phone quote skips the one inspection the code actually asks for. The camera isn't a sales prop. It's the step that decides depth, length, and access — the three things the price is built from.

The “break up the whole floor” quote
Here's the tactic to watch for, because under-slab cast iron is one of the easiest places in the trade to oversell.
A camera goes into your cleanout. One rotted section shows up — real, and worth fixing. But instead of measuring how much pipe is actually bad, the quote comes back to break up the entire floor and tunnel the whole footprint, or to abandon everything and repipe the house. The pitch leans on the scariest thing the camera saw and prices the whole system off it. It's the same move the cast iron replacement page warns about — a full under-slab teardown sold on a single bad section, when a targeted tunnel to the failed length or a spot cut-out was the honest scope.
The tell is simple: a flat price before the camera, or a refusal to say how many feet are being replaced and why. When the whole floor is coming up, ask which sections failed and which are being torn out anyway. If the answer is fuzzy, the number is protecting the plumber, not the pipe. So what will it actually run?
It depends on what the camera shows — and that's the real answer, not a dodge. A shallow, accessible spot repair on a short failed section is the least expensive scenario. A deep, long run reached by tunneling under a finished slab is the most. Age tells you to look — residential cast iron typically lasts 40 to 60 years, so homes built between 1950 and 1980 are into that window — but age doesn't set the scope. Condition does, and condition is measured, not assumed.
For contrast, the number that gets thrown at homeowners on this kind of work is a $25,000 whole-house repipe. Sometimes that's genuinely the job. Very often it isn't — it's the biggest version of the fix, quoted before anyone measured the smallest version that would work.
