What each sewer material actually lasts
So the honest answer to “how long does a sewer line last” isn't a year. It's a question back at you: what is your line made of, and how well was it put in the ground? Two houses on the same street, built the same summer, can have lines in very different condition underneath them. What's buried under your yard was chosen by whoever developed your neighborhood and whatever decade that was — and that material, more than the calendar, is what tells you how much time is left.

The pattern in that table is the whole point: the number on a sewer line tracks its material, and the material tracks the decade your part of town was built. Older historic districts sit on clay and galvanized. The post-war neighborhoods that went up fast and cheap got Orangeburg and cast iron. Homes built after the early 1980s are on PVC.
Each material fails its own way
Clay is the strange one people get wrong. The fired ceramic doesn't rot, rust, or dissolve — left undisturbed it will outlast the house on top of it by generations. What ends a clay line is the joint. It was laid in short two-to-four-foot pieces mortared end to end, and the red clay under this part of Oklahoma swells after a soaking rain and pulls back in a drought. That flexing cracks the rigid mortar apart, the sections drift out of line, and a gap opens that roots follow straight in. So “clay lasts centuries” and “the clay line in your yard is failing” are both true at once — one is about the material, the other is about the seams.
Orangeburg isn't really pipe the way you'd picture it. It's layers of wood pulp pressed together and soaked in coal-tar pitch. Buried in wet ground it drinks up moisture, the walls go soft, and the weight of the soil squeezes the round pipe until it loses its shape and eventually flattens. Once it deforms there is nothing to line or reinforce — the material is spent, and the line comes out.
Cast iron is the odd one out on lifespan: the metal itself can run a century in the right setting — the iron-pipe research group even keeps a registry of water mains still in service past 100 and 150 years — but a buried sewer lateral is a different animal, acid-etched from the inside by the gas coming off sewage until the invert rots through, so a pre-1980 line typically gives 40 to 60 years. PVC is the outlier the other direction. The material barely degrades. When a modern line fails early it's almost never the plastic — it's that the pipe was set on ground that later settled, or was pitched too flat, so it sags into a belly that holds standing water. Bedded on stable ground and run at the right fall, PVC is the closest thing to install-it-and-forget-it that a sewer gets.
Notice what runs under every one of those: the material tells you the likely failure, but only a look inside tells you whether it's happening yet. Age is a cue to look, not a diagnosis in itself. The scam: a full replacement quoted off the year on your deed
Here is the move to watch for. A tech pulls up, asks when the house was built, hears a number from before 1980, and quotes you a full-line replacement — without ever putting a camera in the pipe. The pitch writes itself: “at that age the whole thing is shot.” No footage, no location of a single defect, no evidence the line is doing anything but draining. Just the year on your deed, run straight into a five-figure quote.
A build year is a fact about your house. It is not a diagnosis of your pipe. Selling one as the other is the entire trick.
It works because it sounds reasonable — old house, old pipe, makes sense — and because the homeowner has no way to see underground to argue. Industry watchdogs have documented techs condemning a perfectly repairable line to push a full replacement, then steering a rattled homeowner toward a monthly payment number so the total never quite registers. The people it lands hardest on are the ones least able to absorb it: households without the cash on hand and older homeowners who trust the man in the truck.

If the picture instead shows cracked seams running the length of a pipe that's still round, that points toward lining. When your sewer line's age is worth acting on
Age isn't a verdict, but it is a marker — a reason to get a look inside the line before a small problem turns into a backup. A few situations move a scope up the list:
- You're in a pre-war neighborhood with original clay. The clay is fine; the joints are the question. A camera shows whether roots have found a seam yet.
- Your home dates to the post-war stretch, roughly the 1940s through the 1970s. That's the Orangeburg-and-cast-iron era. Orangeburg that has started to deform, or cast iron that has begun to channel, is worth catching before it fails outright.
- The line has backed up more than once. Repeat stoppages in the same line usually mean a fixed cause — a rooted joint, a belly, a soft spot — not bad luck. That's a diagnosis job, not a re-snake-it-and-hope job.
