Open up a standard gas or electric water heater and there's no mystery in there. A welded steel tank holds the water; a thin coat of vitreous enamel — glass, basically — lines the inside so the water never touches bare steel; an element or a gas burner heats it; and a thermostat and a temperature-and-pressure relief valve do the rest.
Whether that unit wears a premium name or a builder-grade one, the parts inside are the same class of parts, and nearly every one can be diagnosed and swapped on its own. The only component that ends the appliance's life is the welded steel vessel. When it corrodes through, no brand or warranty brings it back. Everything else — the element, the thermostat, the T&P valve, the supply connections — is a part, not a death sentence.
That's why “which brand” is the wrong first question. Asking which brand lasts longest is like asking which brand of car never needs an oil change — the name on the hood isn't what decides it. Maintenance and your water are.
What actually decides how long your heater lasts
Two things, mostly: a metal rod you've probably never heard of, and the water it sits in.
The sacrificial anode rod is an inexpensive metal rod threaded into the top of the tank. Its entire job is to corrode instead of your steel tank — galvanic corrosion attacks the anode first because it's the more reactive metal. No salesman at the big-box store will bring it up, because it's the cheapest part in the appliance and the single biggest reason your tank isn't a bucket.
Oklahoma City water is hard — heavy on calcium and magnesium — and that depletes the anode faster. Once the rod is gone, the steel vessel becomes the sacrificial metal. The brand didn't cause that. A neglected anode rod did.

Parts availability. A brand we can get an element, a thermostat, a T&P valve, and an anode rod for — same week, from a real supply house — is worth more to you than a fancier name we'd have to condemn the day a common part fails.
Correct sizing. A 40- or 50-gallon unit matched to your household's actual hot-water demand, not upsold to something bigger for the sake of the invoice.
A code-legal installation. This is where most of the real difference lives. That permit matters more than the brand, too. If you're going tankless, “which brand” finally becomes a real question
Tankless is where brand choice earns its keep, for one reason: serviceability. A condensing tankless unit is genuinely complex — printed circuit boards, a magnetic flow sensor, an ignition board, a flame rod, a dual stainless-steel heat exchanger. When one small part fails, you do not want a brand where the fix is “throw the whole thing out.”

A predatory outfit quotes you a premium-brand replacement, then installs a cheap unit or cheap parts ordered off Amazon or AliExpress — hardware that isn't ASME- or ASSE-certified and can't be warranted by any manufacturer. The failure is on a clock: these units tend to give out inside 6 to 24 months, and there's no warranty to fall back on. You pay for the heater twice.
Its cousin is system replacement fraud — condemning the whole appliance over a minor fault, telling you a heating element or a dripping T&P valve means the unit is “obsolete,” parts are “unavailable,” and the only “code-compliant option” is a $2,800-to-$6,000 high-efficiency replacement, financing portal already open on the iPad. Mechanically, that job was a brass part and an afternoon.

Sediment — flush the tank periodically. Calcium and magnesium settle to the bottom and cook onto the burner or element. Draining it keeps efficiency up and the metal cooler.
T&P valve — test it. The temperature-and-pressure relief valve is your last line against a pressurized failure. A stuck one is a silent hazard.
Tankless — descale annually. Condensing units need a yearly descale to hold roughly 97% thermal efficiency and to keep localized boiling from stress-fracturing the stainless heat exchanger. Skipping it is how a repairable unit becomes a replaced one.
The number that should make you get a second opinion
Keep one contrast in your head. When a technician quotes a $6,500 “premium brand” replacement — or the $2,800-to-$6,000 “your heater's condemned, here's the high-efficiency upgrade” version — for a tank that was leaking from a corroded flex connection or dropping heat from a bad element, the gap between the quote and the actual failure is the scam. The failure was a fitting or a part. The quote was a car payment.
