A Sewer Camera Inspection Takes About an Hour — and You Should Watch Every Minute
Most residential sewer camera inspections run 45 minutes to an hour. The length depends on access — is there a cleanout to work through — how far the line runs to the city connection, and what the camera finds on the way. A real one ends two ways: you watched the screen, and you left with the footage.
What the appointment actually looks like, start to finish
The clock is the easy part of this question. The part that actually protects you is what has to be true for that hour to mean anything. A camera inspection is a diagnostic job — the camera looks, it doesn’t fix — and it’s built for the big drain and sewer lines, not the pressurized supply pipe behind your wall. This one is about the appointment itself: what we do from the truck to the handoff, and why the time varies.
There’s no fixed script that fits every house, because every house gives us a different line to work with. But the shape of a proper inspection is the same one every time. What moves the clock is the middle two rows.

Why a scope is slow on purpose
A camera inspection isn’t slow because we’re padding the bill. It’s slow because the job has a performance standard, and the standard says slow is the point.
The North American standard for this work is published by NASSCO, the body that certifies inspectors, and it caps how fast the camera is allowed to travel — no faster than 30 feet per minute — specifically so no joint, tap, crack, or infiltration point slides by unseen. Race the camera down the pipe and you can miss the one bad joint that the whole diagnosis hinges on. So a longer line simply takes more minutes, and a line with a lot to look at takes more still.
That same standard is worth knowing for one more reason: it defines the work itself as two things — televising the line and recording it. The recording isn’t a courtesy add-on. It’s half of what the word “inspection” means here. The standard even sets the quality bar for the video: it has to show the full circumference of the pipe wall, not a smeared quarter of it, and the footage carries the distance reading, so a defect isn’t “somewhere out there” — it’s a specific number of feet down the line.
There’s also a shared vocabulary behind all of this. PACP, NASSCO’s Pipeline Assessment Certification Program, is a common language field crews use to classify what a line shows and rate how bad it is. It’s why a real inspection produces something gradeable and consistent instead of one person’s hunch.
What you walk away with
When we’ve got a camera in your line, you’re at the screen while it goes. Not a report emailed later, not a verdict read off a tablet you never saw — the live feed, with you next to it. If you’d rather not stand over it, that’s fine, but the invitation is the whole idea. And you leave with the recording, whether that’s for your own paperwork, a claim you’re filing, or to show someone who wasn’t home when we ran it.

The “camera fee” for a camera that never really ran
Here’s the scam this whole post exists to inoculate you against.
You call about a slow drain. Someone shows up, charges a camera or diagnostic fee, and tells you the news is bad — the line’s shot, you’re looking at heavy excavation. What you never got was the two things that make a camera inspection real: you didn’t watch the screen live, and you didn’t leave with the footage. Sometimes there’s a picture, but the lens is angled to make an ordinary joint look like a failure, or old footage of some other wrecked pipe gets played back as if it’s yours. A fee for a look nobody actually took isn’t the diagnosis you paid for. It’s an entrance ticket.
It works because the pipe is buried and you can’t check it yourself. The recording is your check. When you actually need one
You don’t scope a line for no reason. A camera earns the hour when there’s a real question the pipe can’t answer from the outside:
You’ve had the line cabled more than once and it keeps stopping up. Repeat clearings treat the symptom; the camera finds the real cause — roots slipping in at a failed joint, a low spot pooling water, or a wall crusted over with scale.
Someone wants to jet or dig. High-pressure water and a shovel are both blind without a picture first. We look before either one runs.
